WhO WILL WIN THE WORLD CUP?

Each summer, international teams compete against each other in the most popular sporting event in the world—the FIFA World Cup. The last time this tournament was held was 2018 in Russia and before that 2014 in Brazil. France won for the second time in 2018 and Germany won for the fourth time four years prior. Brazil notably has won five times with the last time being in 2002.

The 2022 FIFA World Cup will be held in Qatar, a Middle Eastern country on the Asian continent. It will be the first time in world history that a country from Asia will host the event. Qatar beat out favorites such as Russia and the United States by offering to spend $200 billion dollars on stadium construction as well as pledging to air-condition all of their stadiums. The games kick off on November 20, 2022.

Let’s look at some data on the top teams!

The Brazil national football team, also known as Seleção, is one of the most successful teams in the world. They have won five world cups, which is more than any other country. The third time they won was in 1970 when they beat Italy 4-1 with Pelé scoring a hat trick.

In the 1978 World Cup, Italy won the championship by beating Netherlands in the final. The Italians had a goal from Paolo Rossi, who became one of the best players in world football with his performance that year. The Dutch were hoping for a repeat of their victory against Germany in 1974. But after 82 minutes of intense play, Giacinto Facchetti scored to seal Italy’s victory.

In a span of five World Cup tournaments, Germany has taken home the trophy four times. The first time was in 1954. They won again in 1974, 1990, and most recently in 2014. When you look back at all of their titles, they had never lost a single game until they were beat by Argentina in 2010 with an incredible 4-0 scoreline.

The first time Argentina won the cup was in 1986, when they beat West Germany 3-2. They were runners up in 1990 and lost in the finals to Brazil in 1994.
